Telecommunications is a wide and vast industry, encompassing numerous services across many different sectors all over the world. It therefore goes without saying that anyone who has control over the majority of a country’s telecommunications system is a powerful and wealthy corporation. Such is the Philippine Long Distance Company or PLDT, the Philippines’ largest and leading telecommunications provider. With its primary business divisions – wireless, fixed line and information and communication technology – PLDT currently offers the most diversified services in telecommunications across the country and holds the most extensive satellite and optic fiber networks.

PLDT’s history goes back to the US occupation of the Philippines in 1928, when a law approved by Governor-General Henry Stimson merged four telephone companies in the country under one American-owned company that allowed for a Philippine network to be set up. PLDT’s initial services were in radiotelephone in the 1930s, connecting the country to the rest of the world. In the 1960s, Filipino businessmen took over the company after World War II left it in ruins and began providing telephone services to rural areas of the Philippines. Under the leadership of Ramon Cojuangco and Gregorio Licaros, PLDT set up its main office in Makati City and in the 1970s, was nationalized and became a monopoly in telecommunications. PLDT is now headed by Manuel Pangilinan, Chairman and President Napoleon Nazareno.

PLDT’s products currently include cellular and fixed-line telephony, satellite communications, electricity distribution, broadcast media and information technology. The company is the preferred provider not only of residential users but of businesses of all types in the country. Through multiple mergers and acquisitions over the years, PLDT has remained on top of its game, far outperforming rivals Globe Telecom, Bayan Telecommunications and Digitel in the telecommunications market. With constant upgrading of its services and technologies and a focus on excellent customer service, PLDT sees no stopping in the near future.

Parents know how difficult it can be to raise kids, especially for those who are doing the job single-handedly or when both parents are busy making a living. What’s one supposed to do when there’s no one to watch the kids at home or take care of their immediate needs when the parents can’t? The answer lies in an age-old solution – get help in the form of a good, reputable nanny. Hiring nannies has long been a practice for families who need an extra person to help out in the house, particularly in child-rearing, feeding and caring. Nannies4Hire.com is an ingenious concept that Candi Wingate came up with in 1987, a business that is now one of the largest and most successful of its kind.

A working mother herself who went straight into nannying after her high school graduation, Candi Wingate was already well-versed in the world of hiring and retaining nannies from a young age. Her first job was with a family with five kids in Texas, and with her savings, Wingate was able to put up her own agency. This agency, Nannies4Hire, has now become a huge, interactive service designed to make it easier and more convenient for parents to find compatible, experienced and trustworthy nannies for all kinds of situations – part-time, full-time, summer, live-in or live-out and so on. Nannies4Hire has likewise established connections with Dr. Phil, Supernanny and The Discovery Channel and other large companies, providing them with nanny services for their employees’ children. Across the USA and Canada, the business has helped thousands of families find the perfect nanny for their needs and also ensure good working conditions for their nannies.

Nannies4Hire has a huge database of well-qualified nannies and when clients sign up for membership, various tools for searching and screening are made available to help match a nanny with a family. The service cuts down on expensive and time-consuming services performed by traditional nanny agencies, and is said to be more effective. With 20 years of service to its name, Nannies4Hire continues to be a wonderful resource for parents who truly value their children’s well-being.

Paperless Post was launched in 2009, making digital communication as personal as possible while looking just as good as its paper counterpart. By modernizing traditional correspondence, Paperless Post makes it possible to not only send your message but to reflect individual aesthetics as well. Paperless Post was started by Alexa Hirschfeld and her brother, James. Over 85 million electronic invites have been sent through Paperless Post though a hard-copy line was launched in October 2012. Since the company began, three rounds of funding have been closed to total $6.3 million. By 2010, Paperless Post had turned profitable, proving that the formal communications online is the future.

Because of Paperless Post’s success, Hirschfeld was recognized as one of the top 100 women in technology by Fast Company in 2011. In 2012, The Guardian also named her as one of the year’s top bachelorettes, while Betabeat.com listed her as one of New York’s most important women in the technology industry.

While some products seem practically to be designed for sale in the digital era, others still call for a more personal interface. Homogenized items such as home cleaning products or mass-produced sneakers are easy and convenient to buy online, but more sophisticated markets still demand more educated consumers and proprietors. One such realm is indubitably that of antiques, which asks for a careful appreciation of unique objects. Carlton Hobbs, one of the world’s leading dealers, acts as the link between many enthusiasts and the pieces that make their collections.

Since establishing himself in Manhattan more than three decades ago, Carlton Hobbs has maintained a reputation as an authority on furniture and objects from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Utilizing an extensive research library of more than 2,500 texts culled over the years, he pursues thorough investigation of each piece he acquires, and often chooses those with aristocratic or royal provenance. The impressive pedigree of Hobb’s compendium attracts a cache of elite clients, among them museums including the Musee de Louvre, The John Paul Getty Museum, The Rijksmuseum, The National Gallery of Australia, The Bowes Museum, The National Gallery of Greece, and The Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In addition to placing works for exhibition in this regard, Carlton Hobbs frequently lends items from his collection to esteemed art and antique fairs, including TEFAF Maastricht, London’s Grosvenor House, and the Biennale in Paris. At the historical Vanderbilt mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Carlton Hobbs houses a globally reputed collection of mirrors, end tables, cabinets, paintings, chairs, desks, and many other items.

When Maddie Bradshaw was 10 years old, she needed to decorate her locker in middle school. When she couldn’t find fun decorations, she took it upon herself to just make them from scratch. And Snap Caps bottle cap necklaces were born! While the inspiration was unusual for other people, it wasn’t unlikely for Bradshaw since her family was into recycling. She got the idea for bottle cap necklaces when she went to her uncle’s old-fashioned soda machine. A bucket of caps was just sitting there so she took one. Her first work was an abstract black and white portrait of Albert Einstein. She put it in her locker and pretty soon her friends were begging her to make some for them as well.

Seeing as everyone like the idea, Bradshaw took it further thinking that the caps would be great as fun jewelry. In 2007, she pitched Snap Caps to Learning Express, a local toy store, selling all of the 50 bottle caps she had in less than two hours. The Snap Caps charm is that you can use them on almost anything. While they’re most popular as necklaces, the bottle caps can also be used on hairpins and bracelets, for instance. Today, 50,000 caps and necklaces are sold every month in hundreds of stores across the US and Canada and the Bahamas. It was also featured at the Teen Choice Awards and has passed $1.5 million in revenues.

While it’s definitely exciting to have a successful company before you’re even allowed to vote, Bradshaw is still a full-time student and plays tennis and lacrosse while part of the swim team. To help her with designs, Bradshaw turns to her younger sister, Margot. Aside from actually helping in designing and painting the bottle caps, Margot also offers great insight on the latest trends.

It’s amazing how little habits could actually help in the global effort to minimize waste and save the planet. One of them is using reusable bottles instead of drinking bottled water. Purchasing reusable water bottle not only provides convenience but is also an eco-sensitive practice. A popular brand is Nalgene. They produce reusable bottles that are safe as they are FDA compliant and free of the industrial chemical bisphenol A (BPA), which is believed to contribute to certain health problems.

Nalgene gained popularity among outdoorsy people but has later been used even in offices. Its durability is one of its best features as well as the company’s commitment to health and ecological concerns. One directly involving their production of refillable bottles is Nalgene’s campaign to reduce plastic bottle wastes in landfills.

Nalgene products vary to fit the lifestyle of its customers and come in 12, 16, 24 and 32-oz sizes. They customize their bottles by allowing customers to mix and match the bottles, caps and their colors.

Buff was probably made popular outside Europe by the reality TV show Survivor. The all-around garment used on the show as a team uniform is owned by a Spanish company, Original BUFF® SA, based in Igualada (Barcelona), Spain. The developer, Joan Rojas, is a motorcyclist who was driven to create a handy and comfortable neck warmer he could use during his rides. Incidentally, his family owns a textile factory which made his quest easier. The result is a tubular, seamless, stretchable headgear out of microfiber. In 1992, Buff, from the Spanish word “bufanda” or scarf, was launched in Europe. Now the company exports to more than 60 countries.

One of the best features of Buff is its versatility not just in the ways to use it but also in its ability to protect the wearer in any climate condition – from a low temperature and high altitude to high temperature and low altitude. This is the reason why it is used in all kind of sports and in any everyday physical activity. From the Original Buff, the tubular head gear, the company has grown to produce tights, gloves, pants, jackets, t-shirts and socks among other types of apparel.

Buff also issues custom-made headgear for companies or organizations for affairs such as an advertising event or even an office party. The designs for the custom-made buffs can be from the client or in collaboration with the Buff Design Team. The minimum number of order is 25 pieces, which can be delivered in two weeks after the deal is made.

Buff supports the conservation of three areas in Europe: Eternal Valley, France; Yorkshire Dales Mountain Trust, UK and Catalan Pyreness in Spain. This initiative is under the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA). EOCA has awarded Buff as Conservation Champion in 2011 and 2012 for their involvement and pledge to the association.
